World's shortest commercial runway

Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, Saba. This airport is located on an island only 13 km² in size and famous for its steep mountains and volcanic landscapes. Yet this small airport has gained worldwide fame, not for its size, but for its spectacular and challenging features. Nestled between steep cliffs and the azure sea, the runway, only 400 meters long, is the shortest commercial runway in the world. Pilots landing here get not only an adrenaline rush, but also one of the most unique flying experiences they are ever going to have.

Located on the eastern side of the island, the airport is named after the politician Juancho Yrausquin, who campaigned hard for its construction in the 1960s. Located on a narrow strip of land, between the high cliffs of the mountain and the steep cliffs sloping down to the sea, it offers spectacular views. At both ends of the runway are precipices that end directly into the sea, adding to the challenge for pilots who want to land here.

Despite the extremely short runway and challenging terrain, Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is known to be safe. However, pilots landing here must have special skills and be extra trained for the specific conditions of the airport. Wind conditions and turbulence around the island make the approach complex, and precision is crucial because of the lack of extra space at the edges of the runway. Large commercial aircraft cannot land here and often land near larger islands, and so smaller planes are flown to the island primarily from St. Maarten.

The runway is technically closed to regular night flights because the airport has no night lighting and instrument landing systems are missing; this means that the airport can only be used during the day, and flights are often adjusted to weather conditions.

Although the airport is small, it is of great importance to Saba's economic development and tourism. The island attracts tourists from all over the world, especially divers and nature lovers, because of its pristine coral reef and impressive nature reserves. The airport allows for relatively easy access to the remote island, despite the challenges of landing.

For visitors, a flight to Saba offers not only a gateway to this paradise island, but also a unique and often unforgettable flying experience. The view of the cliffs and azure sea on approach is breathtaking, and the feeling of a safe landing on this short runway is for many a highlight of their trip.
